Overview of Services

The Imaging Cores - Electron facility provides full Biological Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) related research, consultation and imaging services to faculty, scientists and students of the University of Arizona campus and external research institutions or industrial community. Users bring to the Core fixed samples and we process them for TEM, ultramicrotomy (0.5 to 1 μm thick resin sections and 60 - 90nm ultrathin sections) and digital images acquisition. Individual training is available to the users interested in using the electron microscope Tecnai T12 and ultramicrotomes upon request. Dr. Tonino has experience with immuno-EM and will provide protocols and ultrathin cryo sections on request.

Optical Microscopy

Note: As of February 1, 2022 the optical microscopy aspect of this core will be rolled into Imaging Cores – Marley, which will be re-named Imaging Cores - Optical. No optical microscopes or workstations are physically moving from their current locations, we are simply re-aligning our imaging cores around functions rather than locations. IC-Optical will operate in the Marley and Life Sciences North buildings with the same personalized service that you have come to expect from Patty Jansma and Doug Cromey. The LSN imaging core will be re-named Imaging Cores - Electron.

Two train-to-use instruments are featured. The fully motorized, computer controlled Leica DMI6000 inverted microscope can be used to take brightfield, DIC (20x, 40x only), and polarized light images with a color camera, or these same imaging modes, as well as four channels of fluorescence, using a greyscale camera. The second instrument is a superresolution optical microscope, the Zeiss Elyra S.1. This structured illumination microscope (SIM) can be used to image fluorescence markers at twice the resolving power of confocal or deconvolution microscopes.
