A full-service precision machine shop specializing in the design and construction of custom equipment for scientific research and teaching for members of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.

The Machine Shop of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Support Services (RSS) provides a variety of services and materials including:

  • Precision machining of metals, plastics, and ceramics
  • The design and construction of scientific instruments
  • Project consultation
  • Welding, High vacuum welding, brazing and soldering
  • A small inventory of assorted hardware and raw materials

The Instrument Makers are skilled at helping researchers to develop ideas into complete designs and ultimately into working instruments. Depending on the needs of the client, the Instrument Makers can produce simple sketches, mechanical drawings or AutoCAD drawings. They routinely design simple parts or entire systems.
