CBC XRD Facility

Overview of Services

The X-ray diffraction (XRD) Facility of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry performs, on a fee-for-service basis, XRD measurements and data interpretation for single crystal, powder, and thin film samples by request for all University of Arizona research groups and external customers. The XRD Facility can resolve the structure of small molecules using the single crystal (SC) XRD, determine the composition of polycrystalline powder samples using the powder XRD, and measure structural characteristics (e.g., thickness, crystallinity) of thin film samples by using powder XRD and X-ray reflectometry (XRR). Two XRD instruments are available: the Bruker Kappa Apex II Duo SC XRD instrument equipped with molybdenum- and copper-anode X-ray sources and the Panalytical X'Pert Pro MPD powder XRD instrument based on the copper-anode X-ray source. The available options for the Panalytical X’Pert XRD instrument including sample stages, incident beam optics, and detectors allow theta-2theta, rocking curve, grazing incidence, and reflectivity measurements.
